Free Radicals,  Free radicals are unstable molecules that are naturally produced in the body as a result of normal metabolic processes. Because they have an unpaired electron, they constantly seek to stabilize themselves by stealing electrons from nearby healthy cells. This chain reaction can damage cell membranes, proteins, and even DNA, a process known as *oxidative stress*. While free radicals are often viewed as harmful, they are not entirely bad. In controlled amounts, they play an important role in the body's immune defense by helping destroy bacteria and viruses. Problems arise when the production of free radicals exceeds the body's natural antioxidant defenses. Free radicals come from both internal and external sources. Internally, they are generated during normal cellular activities such as energy production in the mitochondria, inflammation, and immune responses. Externally, they are produced due to exposure to air pollution, cigarette smoke, excessive alcohol consumption, ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and processed foods. Chronic stress and poor lifestyle habits can also contribute to increased free radical production. Over time, excessive oxidative stress has been associated with premature skin aging, reduced immunity, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, neurodegenerative disorders, and other chronic health conditions. The body protects itself with antioxidants—compounds found naturally in fruits, vegetables, herbs, nuts, and whole grains. Nutrients such as vitamins C and E, selenium, zinc, and plant-based polyphenols help neutralize free radicals before they can cause significant damage. Maintaining a balanced diet rich in colorful plant foods, staying physically active, getting adequate sleep, avoiding tobacco, and minimizing exposure to environmental toxins are simple yet effective ways to support the body's natural antioxidant defense system and promote long-term health.
